Anjana, a chimp, cuddles her foster child Sierra, a puma cub!

Posted in Animals  by Laura on August 31st, 2009

Anjana, a chimp, cuddles her latest foster child, a cute puma cub named Sierra.
Anjana reportedly loves nuzzling and bottle feeding her furry friend at The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species Preserve in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Puma cub Sierra is just nine weeks old, and she has recently arrived at wildlife centre.
Chimp Anjana, aged three, is an orphan and she has helped to raise some of the world’s most endangered animals at the centre.
Anjana has previously played mummy to a couple of two-month-old white tigers, Mitra ans Shiva. Anjana grew so close to Mitra and Shiva that she joined in with their rough games and showed off her maternal side by hugging them to her chest.

I love stories like this one that have a happy ending, and the photos are seriously sweet. :)

Artist Liu Bolin camouflages himself and almost disappears in his photographs

Posted in Art  by Laura on August 28th, 2009

Liu Bolin is an artist known as the ‘invisible man’ because he paints himself so that he can barely be seen against the backgrounds of his surroundings as he ‘disappears’.
Beijing-based Liu Bolin is due to exhibit his photographs at the YU Gallery in Paris, France in October 2009.
Liu, 36, reportedly spends up to ten hours making sure that every single tiny detail on is entire body is perfectly matched to blend in with the location of his photographs.
Unfortunately Liu Bolin experienced resistance from the government in his own country, and in 2005 his Beijing studio was forcibly shut down because of the political nature of his work.

Liu Bolin is clearly a very patient and talented artist. I can’t decide which image is my favourite, they are all pretty impressive.

Give Me Women, Wine, and Snuff ~ By John Keats

Posted in Poetry ~ Quotes  by Laura on August 28th, 2009

Give me women, wine, and snuff
Until I cry out “hold, enough!”
You may do so sans objection
Till the day of resurrection:
For, bless my beard, they aye shall be
My beloved Trinity.

Thou shalt not weigh more than ……. thy fridge.

I knew there was a very good reason why I wanted the ridiculously huge fridge we purchased when we moved here to France. :o

Dr Kai-hung Fung transforms human body-parts in to art using CT scans

Posted in Art  by Laura on August 26th, 2009

Radiologist Dr Kai-hung Fung created these beautiful images of human body-parts using a CT scanner.

This amazing image is of the back of a human nose

Dr Fung merged science with art resulting in these stunning images which show in amazing detail how the human body is designed.
Dr Fung, 56, works at the Pamela Youde Nethersole Easter Hospital in Hong Kong. He used 3D computed tomography (CT) scans to map various organs in the body of his patients.
The data was then fed into a computer where Dr Fung added colour to the images in a process he invented calls the ‘rainbow technique’. Apart from that he doesn’t make any other alterations as he prefers the pictures to be a true representation of what the body parts really look like.

This image is the curve in the ear

This image shows the vocal cords

Speaking about his artworks Dr Kai-hung Fung said, “The pictures I create are generated directly from the medical 3D workstation, representing what I see on it. I do not use software such as Adobe Photoshop to further change the image.
“My aim is to preserve the direct relationship between the data and the artwork.
“It is a true integration of art, science and technology and can be studied both scientifically and enjoyed as a visual art.
“The imagery is packed with information. Each line or point represents specific anatomical structures in the body in normal or diseased state. It creates an unusual perspective.”

This image is of rotting teeth

This image show the inside of a heart

Dr Kai-hung Fung’s works show in great graphic detail the inside of the human heart, the back of the nose, the vocal cords, and even rotting teeth.
Since Dr Fung started scanning body-parts and making them in to art, his work has been exhibited in art galleries round the world.
Proceeds from the sale of Dr Fung’s art works are donated to charity.

The image is of the lungs

I’ve always thought that the human body is an amazingly beautiful design, and I love these images, they are truly spectacular. :)

The Royal Villa not only has a butler it also has a chef, and a pianist. The villa is furnished with brand name furniture, a fully equipped business centre, an indoor pool, and a private beach.

I’ve only been to one of these hotels; The Burj Al Arab, Dubai. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Burj, despite it being a seriously gaudy over-the-top experience, much like the look of all of the other hotels mentioned on this list!
I think these photographs prove the adage ‘money can’t buy taste’. :o

Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, Bud Light vs. Scotch Whisky

Posted in News  by Laura on August 24th, 2009

The recent release of Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi has inspired a hurricane of opinions on both sides of the pond.
A website has even been created calling for the boycott of ‘British’ products.

Here are just a handful of the comments that I’ve read today posted on various news websites ~

“Just so there is NO CONFUSION WHATSOEVER, I would like to point out a few important facts:
1). Americans LOVE the British and the Scottish.
2). If any American politician calls for a boycott of British or Scottish goods for ANY REASON, it will be met with a directive to the politician to dive HEAD FIRST INTO A STEAMING PILE OF FRESH PIG DUNG.
3). Politicians strive to divide. It is up to us not to let them. We need to ban together to drive out the greedy bought and paid for politicians. THEY ARE THE PROBLEM.
4). There will be no boycott of British or Scottish goods. Just watch.”

USA

“Yes. Boycott Scotland & the UK. And I hope the US bring those governments down.”
Canada

So you want to bring down a government that has compassion for people written in to its laws, while supporting a government that is happy to kidnap and torture people?

“Please remember that this Labour government has completely and arrogantly ignored the wishes of the British people for years. They have even given our country away to a federal Europe without a referendum and committed us to paying 60% more in ransom to the EU in the future.
The Americans are welcome to boycott Brown, Mandelson and the **** that actually gave the instructions for Gaddafi’s little helper to be released on comp-ASS-ionate grounds in fact they would be doing us a favour if they managed to rid us of them.
The British people have to wait to show their anger until we get the long and un-democratically postponed election in order to boot these self-interested wastes of skin out of office. Don’t take it out on the British people Cousins, they are outraged as well.”

UK

“I’m an American. I love Scotland, but I do believe they made a mistake. It also irks me to no end that the Scottish government has the audacity to keep talking about compassion, yet act as if the families of the 270 victims should just get over it. The convicted killer served 2 weeks for each of his murders then was re-united with a cheering crowd, in fact he even has plans now to write a biography. Compassion is not a word I would use to describe this travesty of justice. HOWEVER, it’s not Scotland I hate- just the decision that was made. We don’t have to always agree, I wont boycott either, just sincerely disappointed.”
US

You should respect other country’s laws as you would expect other country’s to respect your country’s law. The United Kingdom doesn’t boycott American every time they execute a prisoner.

“From a nation full of hypocrisy comes this outcry! Is there anything else you would like to dictate to us … the NHS? Release of prisoners? How about some Capital Punishment or a lack of human rights which is available in abundance in the States? However, I’m sure a boycott of a few boxes of PG Tips in L.A is going to hurt us really bad.”
UK

“British tourists bring a lot of cash to America; considering that the US image all around the world is already in tatters, there’s more to lose than to gain from boycotting anybody.”
US

“The Scottish Justice Secretary made the correct decision in the circumstances. President Obama (which surprises me) Hillary Clinton, and her Senators and all those Americans who think that this decision was wrong should take a good hard look at their double standards on human rights. Their political set up must be the largest soap opera in the world - with a cast of thousands, but they have no right to tell us what to do and should, preferably, shut up.”
UK

Well said!

“At least the Scots government did now bend over and lick the feet of America like the English. Who cares what the Americans say.
Yes I do think it was wrong to let a convicted bomber free but there is also a load of stuff that could mean he did not do it. One in particular where the BBC documentary told about how the “richous Americans” payed the witness millions of dollars for what we do not know as it is a secret and can not be disclosed. Also what about the bomb parts? They stopped the origin of the parts being disclosed … Why???
One last thing, now that America is angry with Scotland I see that we are now Scottish again and not British … Funny that????!!!!!!”

UK

“Hey Brits When we want your opinion we will give it to you … Signed The Worlds Largest Economy (nobody even comes close) …. Yes the United States Of America! Punking every other country for over 200 years!!! You’re our bitch whether you like it or not …”
US

As for America being the worlds biggest economy, isn’t it teetering on the edge of bankruptcy?
Isn’t that like having the worlds biggest dick and being impotent?
In a few years China will have surpassed America as the worlds largest economy, and America will then be China’s bitch!

“Strangely enough they do business and suck up to Gaddafi and threaten to boycott GB. Good reason not to support them in Afghanistan and bring our boys home.”
UK

I couldn’t agree more!

“Isn’t this the same as the USA releasing people who you have tortured for years? Whoops you already did, as usual double standards from you lot. If it’s true this deal will bring a lot of money into the UK so I’m all for it, we don’t want to lower ourselves to become like our enemies, secret prisons and torturing an ill man are not something I want to be a part of.”
UK

“1) Scotland has produced, directly and indirectly, more Presidents of the United States than any other country.
2) The United States brought no-one to justice over the shooting down of an Iranian civil aircraft.
3) What compassion does or did the USA show in the Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo? Those prisoners also had families.
4) The USA has admitted to using 3rd countries as transit for rendition flights including the UK and British territory.
Whose calling the ‘kettle black’?”

Brazil

“America to Boycott Scotland and England.
YES PLEASE! Keep away as far as you want.
Your country doesn’t know the what the word compassion means.
But it does recognise spite and so called retribution.
England and Scotland existed long before the warlike United States, and I expect will still be in existence long after the US has nuked itself.
This is a wonderful opportunity for Britain to withdraw completely from Iraq and Afghanistan. To bring our servicemen home. An excellent opportunity to rid ourselves of all their war machines an weaponry in these islands. Our future lies with the EU community, not the US. Let the rest of Europe join us in boycotting the US and its goods.”

UK

“The ******* Americans have been robbing the world and doing deals to benefit themselves for years so they have no right to call anyone anything!!!”
UK

“These idiots who are calling for a boycott of UK goods are absolutely potty. Although I disagree with the decision to release this fellow, her Majesty’s Government has every right to do whatever it wishes without seeking the approval of the American government or big mouthed ignorant American yobbos.”
UK

“I for one, will continue to buy my Tetley’s, PG Tips, HP sauce, etc., and will gladly spend my money in the UK when I come for a visit in October!”
US

“It doesn’t really matter at this stage whether the decision was right or wrong - it has been done! The Scottish Government can’t ask this guy to come back and die in prison!
What does matter is that the US seems to think that they can intimidate the Scottish Government, and by default the UK Government, by threatening to boycott British goods.
It’s a hissy-fit being thrown by an arrogant country who felt excluded by a process they had no business to be involved with in the first place. Having angered most of the world with their interventions, the US are now turning on their allies who have demonstrated a degree of free thought and action.
Perhaps if we had less of a connection with the US and their self-proclaimed role as ‘guardians of the free world’ (but only by their own design), then we wouldn’t be such a target for terrorists in the first place, and we wouldn’t have spent 8 years fighting two unnecessary wars.
Let the Americans sulk in a corner and throw their trade agreements out of the cot if they must; but they should remember that the British people won’t be supporting another US-created war (sorry - ‘democratic regime change’) when they next come whimpering for support!
The EU economy is far stronger than that in the US. I think we should stick closer to home if people in the US want to start hurling rocks across the pond!”
UK

“How stupid can they be, sure boycott our country, see what happens when your aircraft are grounded, your franchises frozen, you’ll enter an economic winter, I hope someone in power tells this guy to shut it.”
UK

“Well, if the good folks in the UK, could export all the Muslims, homosexuals and Labour crackpots to Libya and let them all go there to die, your island nation just might have a chance ….. keep a stiff upper lip while your government stabs you in the back and by all means, Ramadan kareem …. even on Boxing Day!”
US

“USA - home of waterboarding - inventors of rendition - throwing your toys out of the pram because for once you can’t bully someone?
USA - a place where the word compassion is not known?
USA - a country that let the IRA fundraisers operate for years!
USA - who was your biggest ally and supporter in Iran and now in Afghanistan?”

UK

“I will admit that as an American I do find the decision disappointing. However, I don’t believe that boycotting British goods and services serves a productive cause. Why should we punish the British people who are innocent of this political decision? You Brits have always been one of America’s best allies! It appears to me that this was a mistake, but let’s make up and move on!”
US

“Yeah PULL OUT of Britain. Take your warplanes, your military, and all the rest of your American Government crap from our country’s soil and end the Churchill Legacy he left us with!!
Why wait for Scotland to ignore your warmongering cries before you decide to go??
MOST OF THE PEOPLE IN MY COUNTRY DON’T WANT YOU HERE!!
GET OUT!!!!”

UK

“Barrack Obama a hypocrite?
He had no problem releasing all the Guantanamo bay inmates. Yes, I agree it was a stupid decision from Scotland, but setting up websites telling people not to buy from us or visit us? What a joke.”

UK

“You don’t think we have enough money?? You show how little you actually know.
WE WILL boycott your country. What a slap in the face to My Country you have shown in turning this mass murderer loose.
It has already come back to haunt you in how he was greeted in his home land. It will haunt you more when you find your coffers empty of American dollars.
Funny how many of my father’s generation died to pull your country out of the flames of Nazis control. Don’t have a long memory do you.
Try calling on us when your own terrorist problems increase as you have shown them just how WEAK your country’s resolve is. Good luck with that, as we will just stay on our side of the “pond” and watch you sink.”

US

Didn’t American only enter the war when the tide was turning in the European theatre? If it hadn’t been for Pearl Harbour …….
Up until then many American companies were happy to sell their products to Nazi Germany with the full knowledge that they were being used for the extermination of Jews and other undesirables.
And right now are there not Scottish soldiers who served in Iraq, or are currently serving in Afghanistan? Both of which are American wars.
No doubt soon Saudi Arabi, Kuwait etc will call in the debt and Americans will all be speaking Arabic, and the woman will be forced to wear the burqa.

Hmm, all very interesting opinions.
*Some of the comments have been corrected as the ‘English’ left a lot to be desired!

Top Gear team immortalised in Lego!

Posted in Cars  by Laura on August 21st, 2009

The stars of BBC2 programme Top Gear have been immortalised in plastic brick form for a new motorsport-themed attraction at Legoland.

Top Gears men join the 40-million-brick Miniland attraction at Legoland near Windsor, England.
The show’s presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May as well as the Stig can be seen huddled around a Caterham Superlight R500 in the motorsport-themed arena.

Guy Bagley, Legoland’s chief model maker, said, “The Caterham is such a timeless and iconic car that it was a no-brainer as our choice for the motorsport area.
“My colleague remembered that the Stig had put the R500 through its paces and how incredible it was on the test track.
“It’s a design that lends itself particularly well to our bricks, too.”

I wonder if Lego will produce a set of Top Gear bricks as a set? If they do it will definitely be a big seller.
Top Gear is my favourite TV programme, I love it so much I’d even buy Top Gear Lego!
The Caterham Superlight R500 was Top Gears Car of the Year 2008, I’d love one, but for now I think I’ll have to settle for the Lego version!
